Why am I shedding more since I started rosemary water?
Almost certainly not because of the spray, unless your scalp has also turned itchy, red or sore — that's a different problem and it's further down this page. A hair shedding this week finished growing two or three months ago, long before you opened the bottle. Nothing applied to a scalp grows a hair and sheds it inside two weeks. What changed in week two was more likely your handling, the season, or how closely you're watching.
The arithmetic on two weeks
A scalp hair spends years growing, then a few weeks shutting down, then months sitting still before it lets go. A dermatology review of telogen effluvium puts numbers on all three: two to eight years of growth, four to six weeks of shutdown, two to three months of rest. That's a floor of roughly three months between something happening to a follicle and that hair turning up on your pillow. The same review dates the visible shed to two or three months after the trigger in one passage and three to four months in another, which is about as precise as this gets.
Which settles one version of your question and leaves another standing. The spray can't have sent those hairs into their resting phase — that was decided back in spring or early summer, around whatever install, takedown or hard month you've since stopped thinking about. But a hair that has finished growing is still sitting in the follicle, and it stays there until something moves it. So the open question isn't whether a bottle grew and shed a hair in twelve days. It's whether anything you started in week one hurried along the release of hairs that were already done.
That second thing is real, and it has a name. The same review describes immediate telogen release, where the resting phase is cut short and the club hairs come out early, and dates it two to eight weeks after starting topical minoxidil — a drug, and the only place I found that window written down.
About the "shedding phase"
"What is the actual science behind this? Sorry, but I wouldn't jump on this new trend." Somebody wrote that under a rosemary post, and for the shedding-phase claim in particular, she's asking exactly the right question.
Search this and you'll be told, over and over, that shedding means it's working: old weak hairs pushed out to make room for stronger ones. The only place that has ever been documented is minoxidil. A 2025 open-label trial of 5% minoxidil in twelve people with telogen effluvium notes it in passing, calling the early shed paradoxical and pointing at the temporary rise in the telogen hair ratio as the sign of it.
Rosemary has nothing like it. A PubMed search pairing rosemary with hair shedding and telogen returns nothing at all — though a four-word search coming back empty is a weak sort of proof, so I widened it. Rosemary and alopecia gives thirty papers, nearly all of them androgenetic alopecia efficacy work: reviews of herbal alternatives, a serum trial, the comparative trial everyone quotes. I couldn't find one that tracked early shedding.
The trial everyone quotes is worth naming properly, because it gets stretched a long way. Panahi and colleagues put rosemary essential oil against 2% minoxidil in a hundred people with androgenetic alopecia, and found no significant change in mean hair count at the three-month endpoint in either group. Early shedding wasn't measured there, because nobody was looking for it. That study also isn't a study of a rosemary water spray, and I couldn't find one that is.
So there's no published finding that a rosemary water spray causes a shedding phase, and none that it doesn't. Anybody telling you your week-two shedding is proof of regrowth on the way is quoting you a sentence about a pharmaceutical.
Check the calendar before you check the bottle
Seasonal shedding, unlike the shedding phase, has actually been measured. A six-year review of trichograms from 823 apparently healthy women who'd come to a clinic complaining of hair loss found a yearly rhythm to growth and shedding, with the largest share of hairs sitting in telogen in summer, a smaller second peak in spring, and the lowest telogen rates in late winter.
Read that carefully, because it's a count of how many hairs are resting, which is a different measurement from how many are falling. More follicles sitting in telogen in July means more hairs due for release over the weeks that follow. Open a new bottle in June and you've started walking into the stretch of the year when that number climbs on its own. Add what else tends to move in those months — a set of braids coming down, washes closer together because of heat and sweat, a retwist scheduled sooner than usual — and a takedown, a heat wave and a new spray can all land inside the same three weeks.
What that study doesn't tell you is whose scalps those were, beyond women in a clinic. It says nothing about hair texture, and I didn't find anyone who has run the same counts on locs or coils. Take it as the direction of the thing.
Is it really more, or does it just look like more?
It might genuinely be more. That's worth saying before anything else, because a lot of writing on this subject amounts to telling women that what they saw wasn't there. Some of what you're noticing is probably attention. Some of it may be a real increase. Separating the two takes counting the same way twice.
The population numbers are no help, and they don't even agree with each other. The AAD puts normal daily shedding at 50 to 100 hairs. The telogen effluvium review says 100 to 150. A StatPearls chapter has scalp hair coming out at roughly 100 to 200 follicles a day. Three respectable sources, a fourfold spread between them, and no number there can tell you whether your own head is shedding too much.
Wash day is the only fair comparison you have. Shed hair piles up between washes and the wash releases the backlog all at once, so holding a wash-day drain against a Tuesday pillow will frighten anybody. Collect what comes out during one wash and detangle, spread it on a white towel, count it. Then do it again next wash, same interval, same order of operations.
Locs change the shape of this. A shed hair doesn't leave a loc; it stays woven in until a wash or a retwist frees it, so a retwist can hand you several weeks of shedding in one sitting, in a clump that looks nothing like a daily rate. Count on the same day in the same cycle — wash against wash, retwist against retwist, never one against the other. And if your washes sit two weeks apart, what you're holding is two weeks of hair in one place, which is supposed to look like a lot.
You also started touching your scalp every day
A telogen hair sits in the follicle until something moves it: a comb, a wash, a hand. That's mechanism, not a trial result. Now think about what a daily spray routine actually is — spray at the crown, the corners, the hairline or the loc roots, then rub it in for ten or fifteen seconds, every morning. If you were combing twice a week before, the release has simply moved from the comb to the bathroom sink, spread across seven mornings where it used to arrive on two.
The corners get the most of this, because the corners are where the worry is. They're also where the hair is finest and where the pull from the last retwist sits longest. Fingers working the same square inch every morning, at roots that were tightened ten days ago, is a different mechanical event from the same fingers at the crown. Whatever comes loose there was already coming loose. The spray is the reason your hand is there.
And you started looking. Hair on a pillow you'd have brushed off the sheet in April becomes evidence in July, because now you're waiting on something. The hair is real either way. What goes unreliable is the count, until you measure it, which is the whole reason for the towel.
What else happened in those two weeks
Walk back through the same fourteen days before the spray takes the blame. A retwist. A new install. Braids that felt tight for the first three nights. A change of shampoo, a medication started or stopped, weight lost, a fever, surgery, or a stretch of something genuinely hard.
Tension goes first, and you already knew that. Tension does its damage regardless of what the style is called, and nothing in a bottle offsets it. If it hurt going in, that's information, and it outranks every ingredient list on the shelf. A leave-in applied to a scalp under tension isn't the variable that matters, and nothing you spray cancels a style that pulls.
Then the lag works against you all over again. A hard March, or an install in April that you loved and that was too tight, is right on schedule to surface now — which means that by the time you can see the shed, you've usually forgotten what caused it, and the newest thing in the routine gets convicted on timing alone.
One way a rosemary product can genuinely cause trouble
Rosemary can be an allergen. A review of the published case reports calls contact dermatitis from rosemary uncommon while allowing that it may happen more often than the case count suggests, and it names the diterpene carnosol as the usual culprit. A reaction like that arrives as an itchy, red, angry scalp, and it announces itself.
Itch is worth watching for a second reason, and it comes from the same trial the rosemary claims all come from. Scalp itching rose significantly from baseline in both arms at the three- and six-month marks. It was more frequent with minoxidil, but it wasn't only minoxidil, and that's the finding nobody quotes.
There's a limit on everything that follows, so here it is up front. If rosemary itself is what your scalp objects to, no bottle solves that. Preserved or homemade, it's still rosemary, and this spray carries rosemary extract and rosemary leaf oil both.
If it's the rice half making you uneasy, that's a different worry and it deserves a straight answer too. A fermented rice rinse and a rice extract are not the same material. If you've tried the fermented kind and come away with dry, stiff, straw-feeling hair, that wariness is earned and I'm not going to talk you out of it. The rice in this spray is rice bran extract in a water-based leave-in rather than a fermented rinse, which is a different material doing a different job. It's still your head and your call, and a few days on one small section costs you nothing but a few days.
The commoner problem with homemade rosemary water is what grows in the jar. Boiled leaves in tap water, no preservative, a warm bathroom shelf — that's a broth, and it turns faster than most people expect. An irritated scalp from a contaminated batch can absolutely show up in week two, because contamination doesn't wait on the hair cycle.
Fixing that costs nothing. Brew three days' worth at a time, keep it in the fridge, and throw it out on day three whether or not it smells wrong, because spoilage doesn't always announce itself by smell. If you'd rather not run that errand twice a week for six months, that's the honest argument for a bottle that's already preserved. The Rosemary & Rice Water Spray uses sodium benzoate and phenoxyethanol, with citric acid holding the pH where that system works, which is the unglamorous reason the bottle in week six is the same thing it was in week one.
Whichever you use, put a little on one small patch behind an ear for a few days first if plant extracts have ever given you trouble.
When to stop and see a dermatologist
Some of what gets described under this question doesn't belong on a blog at all. The AAD's list of signs that call for a dermatologist's eyes includes a bald patch or strip appearing within a day or two, clumps of hair coming out when you comb or brush, burning or stinging before hair suddenly goes, intense itching and burning and tenderness where the hair is missing, and scaly bald patches, often with sores or blisters that open and ooze pus.
Any of that and you stop everything you're putting on your scalp and make the appointment. Not after you've given the spray a fair shot. Now.
There's a quieter version the red-flag lists miss. If six weeks of wash-day counts come back honestly higher than where you started, or if you can see scalp at the crown or along a part where you couldn't in the spring, that's a chair-and-a-dermatologist question even with no burning, no clumps, no patches. Nothing on this page routes you to a bottle for that one.
I can't tell you what's happening on your head, and neither can anybody who hasn't looked at it. Loss at the crown has several possible causes and they get sorted out in a chair, sometimes with a biopsy. One of them is central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, which the AAD says often affects middle-aged Black women, and which most people first notice as hair loss on the top of the head. Some people get itch, pain, tenderness, burning or a pins-and-needles feeling; others never feel any discomfort at all, which is what lets it run quietly for years. It's a scarring alopecia, meaning scar tissue grows in over the follicles it has destroyed, and the line that makes timing matter is the AAD's own: treatment can "prevent further hair loss." Further.
None of that is a diagnosis and I'm in no position to give you one. What I can say plainly is that waiting to see whether the spray helps is the wrong plan for anything in these paragraphs, and that no leave-in spray, this one included, treats, prevents or reverses CCCA, traction alopecia or any other form of hair loss. It isn't a drug and it doesn't behave like one.
So do you quit or not
If none of the red flags apply and your wash-day counts land roughly where they were, there's no evidence-based reason to quit at week two, and none to expect anything yet either. Stopping now mostly costs you the ability to tell what changed, because you'd be swapping a variable in the middle of your own count. Hair grows about half an inch a month — a centimeter, if you want the number the papers use — and no topical I found has been shown to move that figure. Continuing isn't free either, and the cost isn't the two minutes. It's what daily anything at the root of a loc adds up to, which is a fair objection and deserves a straight answer. This is a water-based leave-in with no butters and no heavy oils in it, though it does contain a small amount of rosemary leaf oil, so nobody should tell you it's oil-free. Everything that goes in at the root still has to come out at a wash, and locs are slow to release whatever is inside them. So if you're adding a daily spray, the thing to look at is your wash cadence. Buildup and the scalp between locs is a whole subject on its own.
Underneath the counting there's usually a plainer fear, which is that the hair won't come back at all, and no webpage can answer that one. Six weeks of wash-day counts can at least tell you which direction you're going, which is more than the sink can tell you on a Tuesday morning.

Can rosemary oil cause initial hair shedding?
Nobody has shown that it does. Early shedding is documented for topical minoxidil, where one review puts the window at 2-8 weeks after starting, and a PubMed search pairing rosemary with shedding and telogen comes back empty. That's a gap in the literature, which nobody should read as a clean bill of health. And the confident two-to-four-week shedding window you'll see quoted for rosemary has no study underneath it.
Why is my hair falling out after using rosemary oil?
Usually for a reason that predates the oil by a couple of months. Shedding surfaces roughly two to four months after whatever triggered it, telogen counts peak in summer, and a new daily routine has you handling and inspecting your scalp far more than before. If the scalp is also itchy or sore, that's the one scenario where the product itself is a live candidate.
Can rosemary water cause hair loss?
Yes, in two ways: an allergic reaction, and a spoiled batch. Contact dermatitis from rosemary is uncommon but documented, and a homemade jar with no preservative can irritate a scalp on its own. Both of those show up as redness and itch, and both are reasons to stop and get it checked. Through any shedding mechanism, though, nobody has demonstrated it.
Does hair fall out after stopping rosemary oil?
Telogen effluvium is usually self-limiting and runs about six months by the review's reckoning, so shedding that settles down after you stop may simply have run its course on schedule. On stopping rosemary specifically, nothing has been published either way.
How do you count shedding when you have locs?
By cycle rather than by day. A shed hair stays woven into the loc until a wash or a retwist frees it, so a retwist can hand you several weeks of shedding at once, in a clump that looks nothing like a daily rate. How much hair is normal to lose in the shower?
More than you'd think, and the sources disagree: daily estimates run from 50–100 up to 100–200 depending on which one you open. A wash releases everything that has gathered since the last one, so a shower after two weeks legitimately produces two weeks of hair. Compare wash days with wash days and ignore the population number.
